PLEASE NOTE
Many people who rent out cars in Hua Hin DO NOT have commercial insurance for CAR RENTAL (which costs twice as much as private first class non commercial insurance). Many cars for rent are privately owned by Thais who rent them out to help pay their monthly finance payments. Sometimes these cars are rented by middle men or brokers who are not the owners of the cars.
If you rent a car, WITHOUT commercial car insurance (code 120) and you have an accident, the insurance company will most likely refuse to pay the claim especially if they know the car has been rented or hired. If this happens you will be held responsible for all costs and consequences of driving a car without valid insurance. If you injure someone, kill a motorcyclist, or cause damage to property you personally will be held liable and forced to pay (not the owner of the car). If you can not pay, the police will put you in jail until you do ! This is fact not fiction and it happens frequently.
Many people who rent out cars without commercial car hire insurance tell their customers "if you have an accident just say you are my friend and you borrowed the car". This is committing FRAUD and insurance companies are not stupid. If you rent a car from a Thai or another European and you have an accident, the insurance company will ask you to prove your relationship with the person you BORROWED the car from. They will want to see old photographs, correspondence etc. Why should the insurance company pay a claim if they do not have to ?
Also unscrupulous people who rent out cars will hold you responsible for towing costs, salvage costs and loss of income if you have an accident. It is in your interest to check the insurance policy of any car you are renting. It is not worth saving a few hundred Baht per day or a few thousand Baht per month on a car that is not insured for car hire.
Please take a look at a proper car rental insurance policy so you know what to look for.
