LICENCE REQUIREMENTS

Our insurance company will cover any driver who has an internationally recognised GENUINE driving licence who is over the age of 21.

According to Thai law, foreign visitors to Thailand (ON A TOURIST VISA) can use a driving licence from their country of residence, PROVIDING the licence contains a photo of the driver and
is written in English.

Drivers holding a valid driving licence of the 10 ASEAN member countries can use their national driver's licence in the nine other countries without the need to obtain an IDP. These countries are Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines.

Foreign visitors to Thailand (ON A TOURIST VISA) who have a photo license that is written in a language other than English require an  International Driving Permit (IDP). The IDP MUST be carried and presented with the foreign photo license at all times.

Foreign visitors living in Thailand (on non-tourist visas e.g. retirement visas, educational visas or non-immigrant visas) must present a valid Thai Driving License. When you obtain a non-immigrant visa or establish yourself as a resident in Thailand (by enrolling your kids in school or by buying a car, etc), you must obtain a Thai driving license. Please note that although International Driving Permits are valid for up to one year after your arrival in Thailand,
after 60-90 days many comprehensive insurance policies are made void if the driver is still driving on a foreign license

Thai drivers require a valid Thai driving licence or a valid photo licence from their country of residence.

If your driving license is in a foreign language, we suggest you obtain an INTERNATIONAL DRIVING PERMIT (IDP) before you leave your home country. They are cheap, and you can apply for them online.

Even if your driving license is in ENGLISH we suggest you get an IDP because the Thai police will fine you up to 500 Baht if you are stopped EVEN though you are not breaking the law. They want to see an IDP and if you do not have one they will do their best to fine you and extract 1,000 Baht.

You can rent a car with us WITHOUT and IDP but if you get stopped by the police you will be fined.
